Movie Review:
"You Don't Know Nicotine"
Nicotine is an emotional subject. Loved by some and hated by others, it's the perfect topic for a documentary. Those at the premier were treated to an unexpected surprise. As the closing credits rolled by, some sat dazed as they tried to soak in what they had just seen.
The movie is not what some expected it to be.
It's not what some feared it would be.
It's not what some hoped it would be.
It's an outstanding film.
It tells all sides of the story,
with some wonderful human interest aspects,
a healthy dose of science, and
tops it off with a bit of info that makes
you sit straight up in your seat and go
"OHHHH REALLY???".
Many expected an educational film. The kind you'd watch in 6th grade science class. The film shared a lot of information, but told it as a story. It sucks you in and you forget what's going on around you as you watch the story unfold.
As we watched, we got all the things that make a good movie entertain us. There's the drama of parents who love their kids and want to protect and help them. There's good guys and bad guys. There's emotion, fear, hope, love, contempt, distrust, and honesty all wrapped up in a tidy package. The film has plenty of science, but you forget you're learning while you're engrossed in the story.
As a society, we've become lost in the argument over nicotine.
We've become obsessed over how addictive we believe it to be, how harmful we've been told it is, and how evil tobacco companies can be. We no longer question what we hear on the evening news. We don't wonder if we're being told the whole story, or what somebody's motivation might be to feed us information in a certain way. We don't question if we're hearing the truth. We've forgotten there's more to the story than just an emotional fight. We've forgotten to sit down and listen to each other. We've forgotten how to be good neighbors.
This film gave everyone a voice. In a calm, respectful conversation we learn about the fear, about the hope, about the controversy, about the people who would harm us AND the people who can help us. The movie even tosses us a juicy scandal about a bad guy involved with nicotine. It just might be an ironic twist of fate that some of us could learn that who we thought were our enemies are not enemies at all, and who we thought were our helpers are the ones holding a knife at our backs.
If you care about kids,
If you care about health,
If you care about old people,
If you care about the truth,
You must see this film.
It's a game changer.
